More than 150 million people are eligible to vote across Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of 17,000 islands and 220 million people. 
The gap between two candidates fighting for second place in Indonesia's first direct presidential election is projected to be wider than first estimated, a final independent count of votes showed on Tuesday. 
A representative sample of votes by the U.S-based National Democratic Institute and a local research organization showed incumbent President Megawati Sukarnoputri winning 26 percent and ex-general Wiranto 23.3 percent. 
Former general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was still projected as the top vote-getter, with 33.2 percent of the vote. 
A survey by the groups on Monday night had Megawati and Wiranto almost neck-and-neck, with the margin too small to say for certain who Yudhoyono would face in a September run-off. reuters
